Pros and Cons of septic tanks

Septic tanks are used in most homes and companies where there is no sewage system to preserve the space and create value for the property. The drainage system usually plays a significant role when it comes to ownership of properties or residential establishments. One needs to ensure that its sewage system is replaced with a viable septic tank for proper functioning. However, there are some of the advantages and disadvantages associated with modern septic tanks, which one needs to take notice of each time they decide to establish one.

Pros:

1. Relatively cheap; establishing a septic tank tends to be less costly as compared to the regular sewer system. In this case, there is no need to pay monthly fees like when using the drainage system. All they need to do is to pay the maintenance fee when there is a need.

2. It is durable; building a septic tank with concrete leads to a long life for the structure and is more convenient for the family with a big compound. The structure usually lasts for a very long time as long as it is well maintained by its owner.

3. Environment-friendly; when the tank is established well, it ensures that water is recycled in the surrounding area, thus enriching the plants around in that environment. Unlike the sewage sewer system, the septic tank has fewer leakage that might contaminate the groundwater.

4. Independency; once installed in the homestead, no other authorities are managing it, unlike the sewer system, which is regulated by the local authority. The septic tank becomes a private property upon its installation. Therefore, it is the obligation of the owner or the occupants to take care of it.

5. Last for long; when these septic tanks are adequately maintained, they tend to last for a very long time owing to their size and material. Therefore, there is a need to put it under proper usage where there are no bad habits that can affect the duration it takes to last.

Cons:

1. water-usage habits can affect the duration of a septic tank; one should not put much burden on it as it is prone to cause contamination. When professional advice is lacking, sometimes the contamination caused by the household unknowingly can lead to water poisoning.

2. Sometimes the area may limit the structure development; a septic tank usually requires a big space which might not be available in most homes. Since it is usually established away from the buildings, lack of space may pose a challenge.

3. The type of tank, there are so many downsides to the type of material used to build the septic tank, and it may prove to be costly for unknowing investors. Sometimes the installation of heavy concretes becomes so complicated, time-consuming, and costly, thus forcing one to seek an alternative. The alternatives also come with their downsides, which may even cost the owner more than he or she expects.

4. Periodic maintenance, in case there is no proper management of these tanks, they tend to leak and cause contamination. Also, neglect of regular maintenance tends to lower their lifespan.

5. Drain usage can cause more trouble if not properly managed; when the users flush the toilets and sink with ineffective chemicals, these may cause contamination of the pipes leading to the septic tank.
