Whenever looking at a house to move one of the major concerns you have to keep in mind is water supply. You can’t leave without water, therefore, you must have a constant supply of water. The available water sources are well water or water supplied by the city council services.
Setting up a well is a great alternative to getting a continuous supply of water in your home. Well, water has its pros and cons, let have look at them.
Pros:
1. Continuous water supply: You will have a constant water supply from the well. You can pump the water anytime from the well and use it in your house.
2. Free water supply: When you set up a well at your home, you can access water for free. You don’t have to incur any monthly bills for using water unlike the case of using water from the city council services.
3. Healthy: Well water can be very healthy if you maintain proper care and maintenance of the well. Since it is dug underground, it is rich in nutrients and minerals that can be good for your health including children. Water-rich in minerals tastes better.
4. Freshwater: Well-water runs from an aquifer underground making it cleaner and fresh as compared to run-off or surface water.
5. Well protected: City water supply can be disrupted due to broken pipes especially pipes running in construction areas. Well, water is immune to such problems. You will always get water unless the well dries up.
6. It is healthy: Using well water to bathe, drink, cook causes no harm, because it is healthy. It is directly dug from the ground and doesn’t pass through any source or pollution before coming through. This makes it so healthy to be used on or directly for in the human body.
7. It helps you save money: Constructing a well in your house helps in saving money than creating other sources of water. It is cheap to construct a well as you wouldn’t have to repair anything but to enjoy it till you’re tired.
8. It gives you a safe water supply: Well water, is a safe source of water as you get it directly from the ground and it isn’t exposed to germs or any form of contamination. It is a big disadvantage, as most water supply sources are contaminated or polluted.
9. Well water is fresh and high in nutrients: Of course, well water is so fresh and high in nutrients which are needed for all families to remain healthy. Also, since it’s from the ground, it contains quality nutrients that would help in keeping your body system nourished when consumed.
10. Well protected during natural disasters: Often when natural disasters occur, it tends to lead to the contamination of most sources of water. That isn’t the case of well water as it isn’t affected and remains pure and healthy for use
Cons:
1. Electricity needs: You need electricity to pump water from the well. If there is no electricity, you may not have enough water to supply your whole household. If there is a shortage of water, the pump may stop working.
2. Contamination: If the well is not taken care of, some diseases causing bacteria can enter the water supply through damaged casings especially if you have dug a shallow well. Using old pipes can transfer lead into the water. Using chemicals in the surrounding area can be absorbed into the well.
3. Constant maintenance: You have to maintain constant monitoring of the well water to ensure consistent quality. Always pay close attention to the color, smell, and taste of the water. Always get the water tested frequently, especially if a family member is pregnant.
4. Natural disaster: In the event of a natural disaster like flooding, the well gets damaged or the water gets contaminated, and nothing you can do to prevent the disaster.
5. High initial capital: Drilling the well is very expensive especially if you don’t have the tools for drilling. You also have to pay someone to do the work for you. As a result, many people prefer relying on the city water supply instead of a well.
6. It needs electricity: Well water needs electricity to be pumped to remain full which is something that isn’t reliable. Electricity is not all that sure, so If there is no electricity, it would be difficult to pump water into the well.
7. Running into drought: This is a major drawback of well water as it would be limited when drought happens in that area. If there is drought in an area, it is sure that there would be no water to be used and that would certainly cause issues.
8. Possible contamination: There is a high possibility of well water getting contaminated through underground pollution or other casual means. At this stage, it would take a while before the water becomes pure again.
9. High quantity of chemicals: In most well waters, there is a high quantity of chemicals that is needed. These chemicals like fluorine and iron when consumed would have serious issues in the body or when used to wash clothes.
10. High risk of an accident: There is a high risk of accidents when you have a well in your home as there’ve been cases of persons falling in well. This is bad if you’ve got kids in your home as there is a risk of them falling into the well.
